Ask anyone in one of the southern states, "What is your most annoying outdoor pest?" will most likely yield ;"Fire Ants!" Fire ants are also very dangerous to children, the elderly, and pets. They appear to swarm over their victim and upon some chemical signal, begin stinging in unison. They collectively inject a large amount of venom. When a child or elderly person is stung, they may very easily die. Of course this does not even begin to tell what happens to a person that is sensitive to insect bites. If you live outside or north of infected areas, be patient, they have migrated from south America and will eventually be in every state as they appear to very adaptable. There is hope. Many states have developed plans for the average homeowner to at least control the ants in their domain. I am presenting an article that is published by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and does an excellent job in presenting the information. Of course I could have just put the information into my own words and published as my own, but I hate it when people take credit for someone else's hard work. The article is named "The Texas Two-step Method: Do-it-yourself Fireant Control for Homes and Neighborhoods" and goes into the shelf life of products and the proper selection and application of them. It is only four pages in length, including illustrations.
